When:The East Coast Meeting of 1200/1250 scale enthuses is confirmed to be held on Saturday May 22nd 2004, starting at 9:00 EST.
Where:Meeting will be held in the Maritime Industry Museum, on the campus of the New York State University Maritime College, Ft Schuyler, Bronx, New York City.
Location:The Museum and the College are located on Throggs Neck Peninsula, just off I-295, at the end of Pennyfield Avenue, and at the foot of the Throggs Neck Bridge on the Bronx side. Well secure gated area (see photo of entrance to campus)
How to get there:
By Car:It is a 15 to 20 minute drive from La Guardia Airport and a 25 to 30 minute drive from JFK Airport. It takes 20 to 25 minutes from the George Washington Bridge on the Cross Bronx "Expressway" (normally a misnomer) subject to traffic. On site parking is not a problem plenty of parking spaces are available. (See photo) In addition very good security consisting of guard gated entrance to the campus (See photo) along with roving security patrol. The State Police have a unit on the campus. More specific on directions to the Museum can be found on the Museumís web site. "www. maritimeindustrymuseum.org"
General:The immediate area does not have satisfactory Motel/Hotel accommodations. Hotel rooms are available in Manhattan, and motels can be found near the airports, in Queens and on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. Motels are also located north in Westchester County.
SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT:The date of the meeting was arranged to be after the Cadets depart on their Summer Cruise. This means that the dormitories will be empty. I have reached an agreement with the college to use the dormitory as a "Hostel". The rooms will be available for 2 days on either side of the meeting (i.e. May 20th to 24th), subject to the number of persons applying for the use of the rooms.
Each room can hold two persons consisting of two single beds, mattress, chairs, and bureaus. Pillows, blankets, sheets along with toiletries (Towels, wash cloths, soap, etc.) are not available, and must be provided/brought by the occupants. The cost of the use of the dormitory room is $30 per room per night. See photos of standard Dorm room and washing/toilet area, one in each section floor for men and woman. We are discussing arrangements, for three meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner) and will let you know the cost as soon as possible.
Program:The program and activities will depend on input by participants. Items of considerations include but are not limited to: small or large group exchanges, presentations/lectures (limited to 15 or 20 minutes), exhibits, swap exchange, sales or purchase, etc. I have included photos of three of the class room that can be used for the meeting and any exhibits. The desks are free standing and can be moved for different arrangements (i.e. "U" or inline set-ups)
I need input. I hope Paul can help with his experience at the West Coast Meeting. Along with this I need collectors, model makers and suppliers advise.
Special activity:The museum has hosted a number of maritime oriented groups, including Steamboat Historical Society, Maritime High School (SS John W. Brown) Alumni and others. A number of these groups arranged for the charter of Buses or Boats for sightseeing of Manhattan. This includes stopping at the South Street Seaport and the USS Intrepid Sea and Air Museum. If there is sufficient participation and interest, this arrangement is a possibility.
IMPORTANT:I NEED INPUT ON HOW MANY ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND. A LIST OF NAMES MUST BE GIVEN TO THE GATE SECURITY OF THOSE ATTENDING. I ALSO NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO USE THE DORM ROOMS. AT THE PRESENT TIME ABOUT 20+ HAVE INDICATED THEY, AND SOME OF THE SPOUSES WILL GO. IF YOU INTEND TO GO, OR ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING, PLEASE DROP ME A LINE AT E-MAIL email@example.com
