USS Normandy CG-60 was laid down at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, on April 7, 1987, launched March 19, 1988 and commissioned on December 9, 1989. The design used the same hull and propulsion as the Spruance Class destroyer but the rest of the design was greatly modified to incorporate the Aegis phased array arrays. Normandy as the 13th of the 27 ships in the class, exactly the halfway point in the production line. She incorporates the vertical launched missile system rather than the two Mk 26 twin rail missile launch mount found in the first five (CG-47 through CG-51) ships. Starting with USS Bunker Hill CG-52 in 1984 all of the class were built with the vertical missile system. Argos produces an exceptional model of Normandy shown as of 1994(AS-17B), which is available from Chris Daley at 1250ships.com.
