The Bayan proved to be the best of the armored cruisers in the Imperial Russian fleet of the Russo-Japanese War. She was part of the First Pacific Squadron and was sunk by Japanese seige mortars in December 1904. She was subsequently raised by the Japanese and served in the Japanese Fleet as the Aso, until August 1932, when she was expended as a target. Displacing 7,725 tons it was smaller than most armored cruisers of the period but the design was so successful that it was repeated six years later for Bayan II, Pallada II and Admiral Makarov.
