These are photos of the Spanish Canarias class heavy cruiser Baleares, which was sunk in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War. Site members may recall the thread some months ago, in which they voted for Baleares as one of the ugliest ships ever built. The gauntlet was thrown down, and I picked it up. It turned into a ship building "perfect storm" as the world's ugliest ship was built by the world's ugliest modeler (I'm at least in the top 5). I actually think the ship is neat looking, and one can see its British County Class lineage. The kit was the 1/700 resin offering of HP Models that I got from Pacific Front Hobbies. Although it is nicely cast and detailed, I added Gold Medal Model Ultra railings and made the masts from brass. Rigging was 7X and 9X Dai Riki line and the water is Cellu-clay. Finally, I would like to thank Francisco de Nanclares, "Pachi", for his help in researching Baleares' unique turret markings, funnel stripe, and mast configuration. You know - the more I think about it, the more I think we're both so ugly we're cute!
