The Trumpeter USS Hornet has been one of the most popular warship releases in some time. However, the Hornet differed in certain aspects from the USS Yorktown and USS Enterprise. Nautilus Models produced a conversion set for the old Revell kit in 1:480 scale and now has produced a conversion set for the 1:350 scale Trumpeter Hornet. The set is designed to substitute the island, tripod with top, five-inch guns, 1.1 AA guns with assorted tubs, platforms and gun houses. The photographs show the components of the set, except for the instructions, which should be finished before the end of the month. Parts are included for the Yorktown and Enterprise.
The photographs below show the major components of the island, less tripod and walkways. The parts were dry fitted together to check the fit. Parts were sanded except for the bottom of the island to check the fit and the parts clicked together easily. The photographs show the aft enclosed position in place but this is a separate part. The windows of the aft position were easily opened with a hobby knife. The windows of the tripod top can also be easily opened. The Nautilus Yorktown/Enterprise conversion set should be available on February 1, 2003 from Nautilus. If you are in the Atlanta, Georgia area, you can see the set at the IPMS event scheduled next week or at AAA Hobby in Marietta.
