Chokai, Japanese Takao Class Heavy
Cruiser 1942, Aoshima 1:350 Scale - Aoshima has produced a
very fine 1:350 scale model of the most impressive of the Japanese heavy
cruisers, the Takao Class. The Chokai
1942 kit is perfect for the Chokai
and Maya in 1942 and with some fairly
easy modifications for all four members of the class in 1936.
USS St Louis CL-49 1942, Midship Models
1:700 Scale, Kit Review by Andrew Payne - The new Midship Model
of USS St. Louis CL-49 portrays the
ship as she appeared in summer and fall 1942. This review is a little bit
different, as it is bifurcated. The actual kit review is by Andrew Payne
and the photographs and history are by Steve Backer.
HMAS Sydney 1914, H-P Models 1:700 Scale,
Review by George Hargreaves - HMS
Sydney engaged the German light cruiser Emden on 9th November
1914 and sank her. George Hargreaves reviews the H-P Models
1:700 scale kit of the HMAS Sydney of
the First World War.
HMS Norfolk, British County Class Heavy Cruiser,
Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 Scale Photographic Review - Some
warships of the Royal Navy in World War Two won fame in the Mediterranean.
However, there is one that won her fame by hunting big game on the open ocean
and holds the unique distinction of being the only Royal Navy warship to engage
and participate in the destruction of two German battleships. That ship is the
heavy cruiser HMS Norfolk. Now Commanders/Iron
Shipwright has produced a multi-media 1:350 scale model of the famed HMS
Norfolk.
HMS Drake, British Armored Cruiser 1914,
Combrig 1:700 Scale - Combrig
presents another winner with their 1:700 scale model of HMS Drake. The cruiser hull is large and
impressive and yet with less parts on the included photo-etch fret than found in
most Combrig release, the Drake
should prove an easy build.
SMS Blucher, German Armored Cruiser 1914,
Combrig 1:700 Scale - Combrig
has done another admirable job in producing a 1:700 scale replica of the best of
the armored cruisers. Although a World War One warship, this Blucher kit is not for the beginner. With its
numerous searchlight platforms and raised boat skids, there are some delicate
subassemblies found here. However, for everybody else the Combrig Blucher is recommended without reservation.
USS Monterey CG-61, Ticonderoga Class Aegis
Missile Cruiser, Dragon 1:700 Scale - The Dragon 1:700 scale
USS Monterey, CG-61, continues where
the DML USS Philippine Sea kit
ended. It is the same kit with two significant differences. One of course is the
new decal sheet with names and numbers of CG-61 through CG-63. The other
difference is the inclusion of a new sprue, which includes an assortment of
radomes and communication domes. This presents the most modern Tico fit yet
offered.
USS Cleveland, Denver Class Peace
Cruiser 1918, Modelkrak 1:700 Scale - "Hurry, hurry, hurry!
Git chur Peace Cruisers raht chere!" Do your friends in the Bay Area
make fun of you for war toys? Are your love beads too tight from inhaling resin
vapors of the latest warship model? The solution is to build the Modelkrak
1:700 scale USS Cleveland "Peace
Cruiser", rather than a "Warship".
HMS Leviathan, Drake Class Armored Cruiser
1903, Combrig 1:700 Scale, Photographic Review - Leviathan
is a proper name for a member of this class of gigantic armored cruiser. For
years the members of this class were among the largest and fastest warships in
the world. Now, thanks to Combrig, 1:700 models of these giants can grace
the Home Fleet of any modeler.
USS
Philippine Sea CG-58, Ticonderoga Class Aegis Missile Cruiser, Dragon 1:700
Scale - The 1:700 scale USS Philippine
Sea, CG-58, represents the VLS equipped version of the Ticonderoga
class Aegis missile cruiser. Dragon extends the Premium Edition
execution to one of the primary AA platforms of the modern USN. With a brass
fret with lattice masts, radars and a full set of railing, not to mention a new
gorgeous decal sheet, Dragon adds more bang for the buck with this Premium
Edition.
HMS
Kent, County Class Armored Cruiser 1903, Combrig 1:700 Scale -
Time to revenge the Monmouth. With
the Combrig 1:700 scale HMS Kent,
you’ll have the most effective of the 35 armored cruisers to fly the White
Ensign. This small County class armored cruiser sank two German light cruisers
in distant waters and justified the County class design concept as commerce
protectors.
Guided
Missile Fleet, USS Boston, USS Nautilus & USS Currituck, Revell Reissue
- Beat the prices of E-Bay and get half-century old Models for a pittance.
With the reissue of Revell’s Guided Missile Fleet and Seaplane
Tender you can relive a simpler period when this set was the ne plus
ultra of shipbuilding.
SMS
Gneisenau, German Armored Cruiser, Combrig 1:700 Scale, Photographic Review
- If it is time to add Grosser Kreuzer to your High Seas Fleet, the Combrig
1:700 scale SMS Gneisenau will more
than suffice. This highly detailed kit replicates one of the best armored
cruisers produced by Imperial Germany, which in the short span of 36 days went
from overwhelming victory to overwhelming defeat.
HMS
Monmouth, County Class Armored Cruiser, Combrig 1:700 Scale - Join
the Cult of the Armored Cruiser! There is no need for passwords, secret
handshakes or decoder rings. Nor do you need to recite passages from Whispers
From the Fleet. With the Combrig 1:700 scale HMS
Monmouth you will get an excellent model of one of Kit Cradock’s
doomed squadron.
USS
Vesuvius, Pneumatic Dynamite Gun Cruiser 1890, Combrig 1:700 Scale -
Pssst! Hey Buddy, do you need a naval equalizer to all of those fancy-pants
European Fleets? Take a gander at this Rolex, …er…, Pneumatic Dynamite Gun
Cruiser, instant naval credibility on the cheap. What if you could get a 900-ton
ship, which mounted three 15-inch guns and capable of a blindingly fast
21-knots, all for the laughably low price of 350k smackers. These are no
ordinary cannons but through the miracle of compressed air and American
know-how, they fire nitrocellulose, dynamite filled shells. One hit from one of
these babies and there goes one of those expensive 15,000-ton battleships. With
a squadron of these in your fleet, John Bull will go weak in his knees, Kaiser
Bill will have heart palpitations and the Dons will be all a-twitter. Combrig
has produced this marvel of naval technology of 1890 in 1:700 scale with their
release of USS Vesuvius.
HMS
Cumberland, County Class Armored Cruiser 1904, Combrig 1:700 Scale, Photographic
Review - The first of the 1:700 scale Royal Navy armored cruisers
have now been released by Combrig. The photographs of the Cumberland
in this article, show the components
found in the kit. This article is basically a pictorial review/preview of the
kit. The hull is surprisingly large with a goodly quantity of excellent resin
fittings and equipment.
SMS
Regensburg, German Light Cruiser 1917, H-P Models 1:700 Scale - The H-P
Models 1:700 scale model of SMS Regensburg
presents a good model but does present some significant deficiencies. Parts
range from good to mediocre and the lack of locator lines on the deck presents a
pitfall for the unwary. However, with care and a few changes a very nice model
of this light cruiser can be built.
USS San Diego CL-53, USN AA Cruiser, Dragon
Premium Edition 1:700 Scale - Dragon provides a vast number
of parts in their Premium Edition kit for USS San
Diego. However, only about 40% to 50% of the parts are used as Dragon
has included upgraded, more detailed parts for some items, as well as older
parts found in the previous Atlanta
release. A brand-new photo-etch fret designed for this kit and new decal sheet
are also very significant upgrades that add detail to the Premium Edition. The Atlanta
class has always been popular and with the array of different AA guns and radar,
almost any fit of the ships of the class can be duplicated.
HMS Abdiel, Fast Mine Layer 1943, White Ensign
Models 1:350 Scale - The White Ensign Models 1:350 scale HMS
Abdiel is a significant release of a neglected type of warship.
Far better known as an ultra-high speed transport in transporting the most
critical items and supplies, especially to Malta, than for laying mines, the
four ships of the class in the 1938 program were crucial assets for the Royal
Navy in the Mediterranean War. This is not a small model but is not out-sized.
The WEM resin, white metal and brass kit is absolutely stunning. Every
type of part is first rate and concludes with the best instructions in the
business.
USS Olympia, Protected Cruiser 1898, Combrig
1:700 Scale - You
may build when ready Gridley!
Your name does not have to be Charles Gridley to appreciate the Combrig
USS
Olympia in 1:700 scale. The lines are right, the parts are right and defect
free, the instructions are clear, almost every aspect of the model is tweaked to
provide for an easy and enjoyable build.
USS
Chicago, Protected Cruiser 1898, Combrig 1:700 Scale –
The USS
Chicago, a protected cruiser laid down in 1883, was the most
powerful warship in the new American Steel Navy for half a decade. When laid
down in 1883 at the John Roach Yards of Chester, Pennsylvania, she was the
largest warship that could have built at that time in the United States. Combrig
has now produced a 1:700 scale kit of the USS Chicago as she appeared
after her 1895-1898 refit. Review by Steve Backer.
Scipione Africano, Capitani Romani
Class Italian Light Cruiser, Niko Model 1:700 Scale - Named after
the famed general Scipio Africanus of the Roman Republic, the Scipione
Africano was one of only three ships of the Capitani
Romani Class of ultra light cruisers to enter service of the
Regia Marina in World War Two. Built as an answer to very large destroyers
building for the French Navy, the ships featured huge power plants on small
frames and were extremely fast. Scipione Africano
was victorious in her only surface action in the war when she was attacked by
four British torpedo boats (MTBs) in the Strait of Messina. Niko Model of
Poland produces a very good 1:700 scale model of this beautiful cruiser. Review
by Steve Backer.
USS Chicago CG-11, Albany Class Missile
Cruiser, Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 Scale - Do you like your
"Tall Ladies" really tall and stately? Geoff Cook
does and built the new Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 scale USS
Albany missile cruiser as USS Chicago
CG-11 for the 2005 USA IPMS Nationals. In this article Geoff tells about the kit
and how he built it.
USS
Baltimore, USN Protected Cruiser 1890, Combrig, 1:700 Scale – The
best of the cruisers built for the USN in the 1880s, the USS
Baltimore was a second generation cruiser of the new US Steel
Navy built from a British design. Built as a flagship, the Baltimore
was scheduled to replace USS Olympia
as flagship US Asiatic Squadron but in preparation for war with Spain, Assistant
Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt let the squadron commander, George
Dewey, to keep Olympia as well as Baltimore.
Second in line at the Battle of Manila Bay the USS
Baltimore saw the advent of three wars in which the USN rose from
a 5th Class power to the most potent naval force ever seen. Combrig
has released a 1:700 scale of the USS Baltimore,
protected cruiser of 1890. Review by Steve Backer.
Admiral
Makarov Project 1134A Berkut A Kresta II, Combrig 1:700 Scale - The Admiral
Makarov was the fourth of the ten ship class of Large
Antisubmarine Ships (BPK) of Project 1134A Berkut A, NATO Code name Kresta
II. A derivation of the previous Project 1134 Berkut, Kresta
I, this class changed missions with a true ASW capability, rather
than being a Rocket Cruiser (RKR) with a name change, as was the Kresta
I. Combrig now has released models of four ships in the
class, including the Admiral Makarov,
in 1:700 scale. Review by Steve Backer.
ORP
Conrad, Polish D Class Light Cruiser 1944, Niko Model 1:700 Scale -
Some ship designs seem to be caught between two wars. The Royal Navy D
Class light cruiser was one of these designs. The first three
were ordered in 1916 and two of these became the only two cruisers of the Polish
Navy in World War Two. HMS Danae, the
first of the D Class was transferred
to the Polish Navy and renamed ORP Conrad
in 1944 as a replacement for her sistership, ORP
Dragon which was sunk off Caen, one week after D-Day. The newest
1:700 scale kit from Niko Model is the ORP
Conrad, a unique mixture of old and new. Review by Steve Backer.
RN
Raimondo Montecuccoli, Italian Light Cruiser, Delphis 1:350 Scale
– RN Raimondo Montecuccoli
was one of the two Italian light cruisers in the 3rd Group of Condottieri.
With the Montecuccoli Class the size
of the ships increased dramatically over the preceding class and added
significant armor. She was one of the most attractive cruisers ever built. Delphis
has produced that company’s first 1:350 scale model in their Montecuccoli.
The model has a one-piece full hull with two large frets of brass photo-etch.
Review by Steve Backer.
USS
Minneapolis CA36, USN Heavy Cruiser 1943, Combrig 1:700 Scale - Of
the seven New Orleans Class heavy
cruisers, three were sunk at the Battle of Savo Island, Astoria,
Quincy & Vincennes;
three were badly damaged at some point, New Orleans,
Minneapolis & San
Francisco; with only the Tuscaloosa
to escape serious damage or sinking. The four survivors all received a major
refit at mid-war which dramatically changed their appearance. This model is of
the USS Minneapolis from Combrig
in 1:700 scale. The model represents the Minnie as she appeared after her
first major refit in August 1943 with a new bridge, new 40mm batteries and one
less crane. This superb kit comes with two photo-etched brass frets and fills a
large gap in any cruiser collection. Review by Steve Backer.
Tone, Japanese Heavy
Cruiser, Yankee Modelworks 1:350 Scale, Sneak Peek of Master Pattern -
Since there have been a series of questions concerning the Yankee Modelworks
forthcoming release of the Japanese heavy cruiser Tone
in 1:350 scale, Mike Bishop, who built the master for the kit, thought
that it would beneficial for modelers to have an early sneak peek at the kit.
These photographs show the master used as the pattern for the kit.
USS Astoria CA-34, New Orleans
Class Heavy Cruiser, Combrig 1:700 Scale - in the 1920s the United
States Navy built three classes of heavy cruisers in a short period of time
under the limitations of the Washington Treaty. The USN was not happy with the
armor protection on these first three classes. For the next design they changed
the machinery layout and shortened the ship in order to provide a heavier armor
scheme. The result was the New Orleans Class
of heavy cruisers. USS Astoria CA-34
was the first of the class of seven ships to be laid down. Astoria
was in the Northern Force between Savo Island and Tulagi on the night of August
8 to 9, 1942 when the Tokyo Express made its first run and achieved a
stunning victory at the Battle of Savo Island. Astoria
was one of the four allied cruisers lost in that battle. Combrig has just
produced a resin and brass photo-etch model of the Astoria
as she appeared in Operation Watchtower. Review by Steve Backer.
RN Attilio Regolo, Italian
Capitani Romani Ultra Light Cruiser 1942, Regia Marina 1:700 Scale -
This class of ships took the Italian Navy's penchant for very fast, small
cruisers with no armor to extreme form. Capable of 40 knots the Attilio
Regolo was the first of the Capitani Romani named
after the great historical figures from Imperial and Republican Rome. Regia
Marina has produced a model of Attilio Regolo
in 1:700 scale. Review by Steve Backer.
USS New York ACR-2, Prima Donna of
the New American Steel Navy, Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 Scale -
In 1893 a new warship was commissioned into the reborn United States Navy. It
was the first of the new armored warships to complete in spite of the fact that
two others were ordered earlier. However, unlike the USS
Maine and USS Texas,
which were designed from the start as second class warships, the new armored
cruiser, USS New York, was the finest
armored cruiser in the world when commissioned. From the day of her
commissioning the New York was the
most sought after command in the USN. Throughout the 1890s and into the new
century New York was the flagship of
the premiere formation of the USN, the North Atlantic Squadron. However, when
her chance came on July 3, 1898, fate cruelly snatched glory from her. Commanders/Iron
Shipwright has produced a one-piece full hull model of the USS
New York ACR-2 in 1:350 scale. Review by Steve Backer.
USS
Bainbridge CGN-25, JAG 1:700 Scale, Builp Up Review - Peter Van
Buren has a marked fondness for the model kits from JAG but then
again, who doesn't? Fine detail combined with superb casting always make any JAG
product a standout. This time Peter has built the latest from JAG, the USS
Bainbridge CGN-25 in 1:700 scale.
USS Bainbridge CGN-25, Nuclear
Powered Missile Cruiser, JAG 1:700 Scale – The USS
Bainbridge was the first nuclear powered escort ship built for
the USN. Originally classed as a frigate and given a destroyer leader hull
number DLGN-25, the Bainbridge
was retyped as a cruiser in 1975. JAG has produced a superb 1:700 scale
model of the Billy B as she appeared in her last fit. Review by Steve
Backer.
Algérie, French Heavy Cruiser
1941-1942, Combrig 1:700 Scale - From 1921 through 1935 all major
naval powers engaged in building heavy cruisers. With the Washington Treaty Battleship
Holliday in effect, naval competition concentrated on heavy cruiser
construction. Of all the Treaty Cruisers constructed by all the powers,
the best design within Treaty limits, was the 7th and last French heavy cruiser,
the Algérie. When the Kriegsmarine
set to design their Hipper Class heavy cruisers, the requirements
specified that it had to equal the best of foreign cruisers, which was further
specified as the Algérie. Now you
can add this striking cruiser to your fleet. Combrig has produced a resin
and brass photo-etch model of the Algérie
in 1:700 scale. Review by Steve Backer.
HMAS Sydney, Australian Modified
Leander Class Light Cruiser, NNT 1:700 Scale - The Royal Navy
redesigned the single stack Leander Class
light cruiser in order to incorporate a new machinery plan. The new class dubbed
the Modified Leander Class were
handsome two funnel light cruisers. The HMAS Sydney
was the last of the three to be laid down but the first of the class to be
completed. HMAS Sydney excelled in
the fighting in the Mediterranean Sea in 1940, at one time ambushing two Italian
light cruisers. However, she is best remembered for her loss with all hands from
an engagement with the German raider Kormoran.
NNT has now produced an 1:700 scale model of this excellent and tragic
cruiser. Review by Steve Backer.
USS Long Beach CGN-9,
Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 Scale - The USS
Long Beach CGN-9 was the first nuclear powered cruiser in the
world. She had a long life of 34 years, ending in 1995. She was totally unique
in appearance with a towering block house superstructure. Geoff Cook
reviews his build of the Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 scale USS
Long Beach CGN-9. Geoff built her in the appearance Long
Beach had late in her career with Harpoon & Tomahawk missiles
and a lattice main mast.
USS Bainbridge CGN-25, JAG 1:700 Scale
- These photographs are from JAG and show the resin hull casting and
photo-etch fret for the JAG USS Bainbridge in
1:700 scale. The Bainbridge
will be available in mid to late July 2004 when JAG will start shipping
the kits. The model will feature resin and white metal smaller parts,
photo-etched fret and full decal sheet including low and high visibility hull
numbers.
RN
Eugenio Di Savoia, Italian Light Cruiser 1937, Delphis 1:700 Scale
- This class of two light cruisers, Emanuele
Filiberto Duca D’Aosta and Eugenio
Di Savoia, was the 4th class of Italian light cruisers
collectively called the Condottieri. Prior to this design, Italian
light cruisers were practically unarmored. This design changed that trend by
having 22% of her displacement devoted to armor and was a far better all-around
warship. Delphis makes a 1:700 resin model of the Eugenio
Di Savoia. Review by Steve Backer.
USS Boston, Protected Cruiser 1887,
Commanders/Iron Shipwright 1:350 Scale - In 1883 the United States
had no navy of which to speak. The relics in service in the USN were easily
outclassed by the navies of Chile and Brazil, not to mention almost every
European country. In 1883 three cruisers and a dispatch vessel were finally
approved by a Congress, wary of large navies. The first two cruisers to be
commissioned were USS Atlanta of 1886
and USS Boston of 1887. These
sisterships were substandard when compared with European designs but were well
worth their price in jump-starting the US naval construction industry and for
training officers and crew of the American Steel Navy. The Boston
was with Commodore Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay. Now the first class of
steel and steam cruiser for the USN will be available in 1:350 scale from Commanders/Iron
Shipwright. This is a preview of the kit showing the hull casting, brass
photo-etch fret and some but not all of the smaller resin parts.
HMS Scylla, Dido Class AA Cruiser
1942, WSW 1:700 Scale - The Dido Class
of light cruisers were designed to carry five 5.25-inch twin mounts. However,
the new King George V Class
battleships also mounted this system as secondary batteries. There were not
enough to go around and the battleships had the priority. Because of this most
of the Dido Class were fitted without
their full five turrets. The crunch came with the three ships of the 1938
Programme. There were only enough available 5.25-inch mounts for one of the
three Didos in this group. The other
two, Scylla and Charybdis,
received four 4.5-inch twin mounts. Because of their light main armament, the
pair became known as The Toothless Terrors. The latest model from WSW
is HMS Scylla in 1:700 scale. Review
by Steve Backer.
USS Brooklyn ACR-3, Armored
Cruiser 1898, YS Master Pieces 1:350 Scale - At the Battle of
Santiago on July 3, 1898, both American flag officers flew their flags on
armored cruisers. Commodore Schley, who had defacto command during the battle
was aboard the USS Brooklyn, the
newest of the American armored cruisers. Exhibiting all facets of French warship
design, the Brooklyn was an extremely
handsome warship of flowing curves, as well as being one of the most powerful
cruisers of her type. The latest 1:350 scale reproduction from YS
Master Pieces is the USS Brooklyn,
who has produced a kit as lovely as the original design. Review by Steve Backer.
Building
the SMS Zenta, WSW 1:700 Scale - Jim Baumann relates his
experiences and techniques that he used in building the Austro-Hungarian Scout
Cruiser, SMS Zenta, in 1:700 scale
from WSW. He portrays the cruiser under partial auxiliary sail as she
crossed the Indian Ocean in a 1900 Pacific cruise. Jim really likes the WSW
kit and tells you why.
Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italian
Light Cruiser WW2, Regia Marina 1:700 - The Italian Navy launched a
series of very fast, almost unarmored light cruisers in the 1930s. They were
collectively called the Condottieri. The 5th class did a
complete turn around in that they sacrificed speed for very good armor
protection. This class consisted of , Luigi
Di Savoia Duca Degli Abruzzi and Giuseppe
Garibaldi. Regia Marina has released a 1:700 scale resin
and photo-etch model of these cruisers with options to build either ship in any
fit from 1938 to 1951. Review by Steve Backer.
Admiral Ushakov, Russian
Rocket Cruiser - The culmination of the Rocket Cruiser (RKR)
concept, the four ships of the Kirov Class
are sometimes called atomic cruisers because of their nuclear propulsion. Large
and impressive, the first of the class was Kirov,
which was renamed Admiral Ushakov in
1992. The Admiral Ushakov varied
significantly from the following three sisterships. Dragon has produced
injection plastic kits of both variants. It is time for a reconnaissance of this
significant release and the scouts are back. This photographic review of the 256
part Admiral Ushakov in 1:700 scale
from Dragon shows all of the components of the kit.
Nisshin, Japanese Armored
Cruiser 1904 - With tensions nearing a peak between Imperial Japan
and Imperial Russia in China and Korea, Japan went shopping for naval
reinforcements. From Argentina she purchased the last two Garibaldi
Class Armored Cruisers, built in Italy. Designed to be an armored
cruiser fit to steam in a line of battle, Nisshin
lived up to the hype, as flagship of Vice-Admiral Misu, second in command to
Admiral Togo at Tsushima, Nisshin
suffered more hits than any other Japanese ship, other than Mikasa.
Combrig is about to release an 1:350 scale model of Admiral Misu's
flagship. This photographic preview shows all of the resin components and the
instructions.
USS California CGN-36
-Peter Van Buren looks at the JAG USS
California CGN-36 in 1:700 scale. In his build of this beautiful JAG
model, Peter has, as always, added is own special touches.
USS Long Beach CGN-9, 1:350
Scale - This 17,350 ton (fl) cruiser was the first nuclear powered
surface escort. Designed to complement and provide anti-air and anti-submarine
capabilities for CVN-65, the USS Long
Beach was one of the most distinctive designs of the era. Commanders/Iron
Shipwright has now produced a one piece, full hull model of Long
Beach in 1:350 scale.
Moskva, Project 1164 Rocket
Cruiser (RKR) - The Moskva
originally Slava is one of the four
newest missile cruisers built for the Soviet Union and then the Russian and
Ukrainian navies. Second in size only to the huge Kirov
Rocket Cruisers, the class is very distinctive with their sixteen Surface to
Surface missile canisters running a third the length of the ship. This
photographic preview shows all of the resin components of this 1:700 scale kit
from Combrig, plus the box art and decal sheet, which is a first
for Combrig. There is no need to search for decals to replicate the
Russian style numbers on the side of the hulls. Also shown is the initial draft
of the instructions. Not shown in this review is the photo-etched fret and final
instructions that will come with the kit.
WSW KuK Sangt Georg, Austro Hungarian Panzerkreuzer,
1917/18 - Rob Mackie takes an in-box look at this recent WSW 1:700th
waterline release and likes what he sees .
Varyag, Imperial Russian Cruiser
1st Rank, 1904 - In 1898 the Imperial Russian Admiralty went
shopping overseas for warships for their rapidly expanding fleet. William Cramp
& Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, won the contract to build the
Battleship Retvizan and the Cruiser
1st Rank Varyag. The Varyag
never lived up to her possibilities because of a poor selection for the boilers
by Cramp. On February 9, 1904 Varyag
took on an entire Japanese cruiser squadron in a vain attempt to break through
their blockade and reach Port Arthur. Box 261 is about to release a 1:350
scale model of this cruiser. Review by Steve Backer.
Kasuga, Japanese Armored Cruiser
1904 - Kasuga and her
sister Nisshin were purchased by
Japan on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War. When Japan lost 1/3 of her
battleship force to mines on May 15, 1904, Kasuga
and Nisshin were placed with the
battleships in the battle line. The last of ten Garibaldi
Class Cruisers built for export by Ansaldo in Genoa, Italy, the
armored cruiser Kasuga in 1:350
scale, is the first model from Box 261, a new model producer from Kiev.
Review by Steve Backer.
Avrora,
Russian Protected Cruiser & Hero of the Revolution - In
1927 the old Russian protected cruiser, Avrora
received the Order of the Red Banner for the part she played in the October
Revolution. Combrig has released a 1:700 scale resin kit of Avrora,
as she appeared prior to a refit in World War One.
USS Milwaukee, St. Louis
Class Protected Cruiser - The USN wanted an improved Olympia
design of intermediate cruiser. What they created was a thoroughly
unsatisfactory design. Although possessing the good looks of a smaller version
of the Pennsylvania, the 9,700 ton
cruisers were grossly under-gunned with only six-inch guns. Iron Shipwright
has produced the USS Milwaukee
in 1:350 scale. This is a photographic preview of the components of the kit.
Dmitri
Donskoi, Russian Armored Cruiser,
Cruiser 1st Rank, Laid Down in 1881, the cruiser was at Tsushima. The Combrig
1:700 scale model of Dmitri Donskoi
depicts her as commissioned in 1885 with three full masts with fighting tops,
plus bowsprit. This is a photographic preview of the
components of the kit.
Vladimir
Monomakh, Build Review - Laid down in 1880 this armored cruiser is
fitted with a full set of masts and sails. She is an example of the confusion
that existed in all navies cruiser designs of the period. Build review of the
1:700 scale kit of Vladimir Monomakh
produced by Combrig. Review by Steve Backer.
Pallada, Russian
Protected Cruiser 1904 - Pallada
was name ship of a three member class of protected cruisers rated as Cruisers
First Rank by the Imperial Russian Navy. She was a member of the First Pacific
Squadron at Port Arthur. This is a photographic preview of the Combrig
1:700 scale model of the Pallada of
the Russo-Japanese War.
Novik, Cruiser 2nd
Class - During the Russo-Japanese War, no Imperial Russian warship
was handled with more aggressively, with skill and professionalism than the
small 3,000 ton cruiser 2nd rank, Novik.
Combrig has produced a 1:350 scale model of this notable vessel. This is
