Only with Combrig can you build this Disney version of a battleship with her towering superstructure, amidship castles, severe tumblehome, and heavy large structures hanging above each major gun position. July 19, 2011 IJN Aircraft Carrier Drains, Lion Roar 1:700 Scale, Set R7032 - Lion Roar brass 1:700 scale photo-etch set R7032 is entitled IJN Aircraft Carrier Drain. What is a carrier drain? When I saw them I thought they were hull side catwalks and the photographs were labeled as such. I was wrong. Dan Kaplan knew exactly what they were. "These are not catwalks. IJN CV flight decks were ringed with rain gutters. That's what LionRoar's "Drains" are meant to depict, though only the top of them. July 11, 2011 HMCS Chilliwack, Canadian Corvette, Revell 1:72 Scale, Built by Bill Hutcherson - This is the Revell kit of HMCS Snowberry, modified to represent HMCS Chilliwack, built by Bill Hutcherson. It required quite a bit of modification on engine room decking - moving the 2 pounder bandstand aft, adding steel deck to accommodate the 26 foot whaler, including a fair amount of GLS upgrading. July 10, 2011 I-400, Japanese Aircraft Carrying Submarine, Tamiya 1:700 Scale, Built by Greg Agnello - This is Tamiya's version of the I-400 in 1/700 scale. Greg Agnello added some photo-etched handrails, hatches and figures along with some additional rigging form reference photographs. The ship was weathered with different mixed hues of paints to achieve the desired effects. Added to the Submarine Gallery.

July 2, 2011 SMS Hindenburg, Scratch-Built in 1:550 Scale by Greg Shoda - Here are photos of Greg Shoda's 1/550 scale model of SMS Hindenburg. It is a very simple model without a lot of detailing. The hardest part was aligning the tripod legs. Greg dropped the model at least a couple of times since he finished it, but it is pretty sturdy. Added to the Battleship Gallery. 
July 1, 2011 HMS Repulse Wooden Decks For the Trumpeter Kit, ArtwoxModel 1:350 Scale - I'm pumped about the ArtwoxModel five deck set for the Trumpeter 1:350 scale HMS Repulse. After fitting the wooden quarterdeck to the plastic Trumpeter deck, I found that removing the wooden deck from the sheet was easy and really enhanced the appearance off the battlecruiser's long quarterdeck. June 24, 2011 Leander Class Variants, British Frigates, MT Miniatures, Built by Tony Stubbs - Tony Stubbs recently came across a site that is producing 1/700 scale resin kits of Royal Navy ships from the 60s,70s and 80s. The site is MT Miniatures (A link to MT Miniatures is on the home page). Tony purchased all 4 of their Leander Class variations and with a bit of help from some White Ensign Models brass and some Dragon spares he got a very nice result. June 19, 2011 Tarantul II, Missile Boat, Innex 1:400 Scale, Built by Hans Beernink - Here is Hans Beernink's 1/400 scale Innex Tarantul II class missile boat.  The Innex, which Hans believes is from the Mirage line and is based from that kit. June 16, 2011 HMS Kent, County Class Armored Cruiser, Combrig 1:350 Scale - From 1898 to 1905 the Royal Navy designed seven classes of armored cruisers. In less than a decade, in this period of armored cruiser mania, there were 35 British armored cruisers built. Ten of these were of the trade protection County Class. HMS Kent was one of these. June 13, 2011 SS Catahoula, Molasses Tanker 1920-1942, Battlefleet Models 1:700 Scale, Built by Lamar Jones - This is the SS Catahoula, Molasses Tanker operated by the Cuba Distilling Company and built by Lamar Jones. The model is a modified Hog Islander from the Battlefleet Models line, in 1/700 scale. The modifications include down rigged booms, cut down bulwarks, plated over hatches and addition of other tank hatches, and a cat walk from the mid-ship house to the stern. Gold Medal Models photo-etch was used for the railings and the Kingfishers are from Trumpeter. She is painted in Measure 32, Design 22D using White Ensign Colourcoats. June 8, 2011 Scharnhorst Saluting U-47 1939, Diorama by Kostas Katseas in 1:700 Scale - This is Scharnhorst in 1939 built in 1/700 scale with the Tamiya kit and with the Flyhawk set by Kostas Katseas. June 7, 2011 IJN 25mm Antiaircraft Guns II, Lion Roar 1:700 Scale, Set R7031 - The Imperial Japanese Navy introduced their single 25mm antiaircraft guns early in the war and only later fielded the twin and triple gun mounts. June 4, 2011 Sverdlov, Soviet Light Cruiser, Scratch-Built in 1:200 Scale by Shuki Aloni - Shuki Aloni has built a new model of the Soviet cruiser Sverdlov scratch-built in 1:200 scale. It took him one month to build and in his tradition, it was made of card board and balsa  wood and that is the reason for it's very light weight  (900 grams only -105 cm long). May 23, 2011 X-Craft, British Midget Submarine, Admiralty Model Works 1:350 Scale, Build Review by Felix Bustelo - Admiralty Model Works has gained a reputation for well-cast 1/700 scale kits and 1/350 scale accessories and now they are venturing into 1/350 scale submarine kits.  They had already released kits of the Foxtrot and HMS Astute class and Felix Bustelo was pleasantly surprised to hear Pavel Vacata’s announcement that Admiralty Model Works was going to release a 1/350 scale model of the X-Craft British Midget Submarine. May 21, 2011 HMS Sheffield, Town Class Light Cruiser, Scratch-Built in 1:200 Scale by Shuki Aloni - These are pictures of the HMS Sheffield scratch-built in 1:200 by Shuki Aloni. It took him three weeks to built it  last year and it also made from cardboard and balsa wood. Added to the Cruiser Gallery. 
May 20, 2011 World War Two, USN Barges Set Two, YC293 & YC755, Lion Roar 1:700 Scale, Set R7005 - Lion Roar Barge Set Two, Set R7005 provides the modeler with accommodation barges for dioramas but in two decidedly different configurations. YC-293 appears as a dwelling with a long series of standard building windows. However, YF-755 still has the appearance of a cargo barge, even though it was used at Ulithi for berthing. May 14, 2011 Lira Project 705 Alfa Class, OKB Grigorov 1:700 Scale, Built by Felix Bustelo -Felix Bustelo doesn't usually build in 1/700 scale but he must say the OKB Grigorov Alfa attack submarine was a fun kit to build. The draft, emergency buoy and rescue hatch markings came of a 1/700 scale Soviet submarine decal sheet that Greg "Gunner" Stitz was kind enough to give Felix. Added to the Submarine Gallery. 
May 13, 2011 HMS Montgomery, Town Class Destroyer, White Ensign Models 1:350 Scale, Built by Glavan Srdjan - Here are a few pictures of the latest work by Captain Glavan Srdjan. It is a model of HMS Montgomery Town Class destroyer produced by White Ensign Models in 1:350 scale. The castings range from excellent to good. The design of the ship with its numerous platforms with support structures, well executed by NNT in resin and photo-etch, will make for busy and intricate upper works and the range-finding baffles on the funnels make Perth totally unique. May 10, 2011 Retvizan, Imperial Russian Battleship, Scratch-Built in 1:550 Scale by Greg Shoda - One of Greg Shoda's ongoing projects has been to build a model of each Russian battleship classes starting from Navarin. He held off on building Retvizan for several years as he did not think that he could successfully render the small oval openings seen in the model. Greg finally started the build in December 2010 but not with much confidence as the plans he used included a great many details that were a challenge for him to render in 1/550 scale. May 8, 2011 Hai Pao SS-792, Robin Models 1:350 Scale, Built by Chen, Chih-Pang - This is the model kit of the Robin Model 1/350 scale Balao class submarine Hai Pao SS-792 built by Chen, Chih-Pang. Originally built as the USS Tusk (SS-426), on April, 11, 1946. The Tusk remained in US Service until 1973 when she was transferred to Taiwan as part of the  Security Assistance Program.  Added to the Submarine Gallery. 
May 7, 2011 World War Two USN Barges Set One, YF390 & YF959, Lion Roar 1:700 Scale, Set R7004 - Lion Roar has produced three sets of the homely but essential barges in 1:700 scale. The barge bunnies will love these, however these little gems are just perfect for yard or port dioramas hitched up to a more glamorous warship. May 5, 2011 IJN Funnel Foot Rails, Lion Roar 1:700 Scale, Set R7033 - If you examine any Imperial Japanese Navy warship from World War Two, you’ll notice the prominent use of hand/foot rails on the funnels. It doesn’t matter if they are a battleship or aircraft carrier or a destroyer, they all have these rails. Injected plastic manufacturers have replicated this feature, if they have tried at all, with raised seams. Unfortunately, that doesn’t cut it. Now, Lion Roar has come out with a brass photo-etch fret to provide these iconic features in 1:700 scale with their R7033 photo-etch set. Added to the 1:700 Scale Photo-Etch Reviews Section.

April 13, 2011 USS Worcester CL-144 1958, Admiralty Model Works 1:700 Scale - An exemplary product in every facet except one, as the photo-etch inclined ladders are merely ordinary and not exceptional, the Admiralty Model Works 1:700 scale USS Worcester can be built as the 1958 fit with unique parts for the Worcester or Roanoke with a 3rd option for a Worcester 1950 fit. This is an outstanding kit with superb resin parts, brass barrels and masts and two relief-etched frets that provides the best kit available of the unique heavy AA Worcester class light cruiser. April 12, 2011 USS Long Beach CGN-9, Nuclear Missile Cruiser 1961, Cyber-Hobby/Dragon 1:700 Scale - Cyber-Hobby/Dragon had produced a plastic and brass 1:700 scale model of the last true cruiser to be built for the USN, the splendid USS Long Beach. Thoughtfully, parts for the 1961 and 1967 fits have been included as well as a lower hull part for full hull enthusiasts. April 11, 2011 Myoko, Japanese Heavy Cruiser, Aoshima 1:350 Scale, Built by Jose Soca -  This 1941 Myoko was a pleasant build. Jose Soca doesn’t regret having building the Aoshima 1:350 scale Myoko because he like her a lot after her refit when those big wind baffles were added to the bridge. Added to the Cruiser Gallery. 
April 10, 2011 HMCS Fennel, Canadian Corvette, Matchbox 1:72 Scale, Built by Kevin Wenker - This is the Matchbox corvette kit in 1:72 scale kit totally redone by Kevin Wenker as the HMCS Fennel using the GLS (Great Little Ships) brass replacement and accessories package.  It is painted with Mr. Color and Tamiya and weathered with oil paints. April 9, 2011 USS Lexington CV-2, Trumpeter 1:700 Scale, Built by Jae Won Kim - Jae Won Kim recently completed a new model of the Trumpeter 1/700 scale US Carrier Lexington. He built her as she appeared at her last battle in the Coral Sea . Jae used photo-etched parts from Gold Medal Models, Flyhawk and Lion Roar. Added to the Aircraft Carriers Gallery. 
April 8, 2011 Spanish 5.5-Inch Secondary Gun from the Armored Cruiser Infanta Maria Teresa, by Nathan Bartlett - You can find odd bits of history scattered here and there. Nathan Bartlett found such a bit in Ottumwa, Iowa after hearing a rumor that some of the ordinance salvaged from the hulks of the Spanish fleet was displayed on the town square. The 5.5-Inch secondary gun was salvaged from the Infanta Maria Teresa was removed at some point and displayed in Ottumwa. Added to the Ordnance Section in the Warship Walk-Arounds Column. 
April 7, 2011 HMVS Cerberus, Australian Monitor, Combrig 1:350 Scale, Built by Felix Bustelo - Monitor Maven, Felix Bustelo, having built quantities of USN monitors, ventured further afield. Afflicted with monitor madness, Felix had a go with Her Majesty's Victoria Ship Cerberus in 1:350 scale from Combrig. Added to the Battleship Gallery. 
April 6, 2011 HMS Repulse 1941, Trumpeter 1:350 Scale, Built by Jaap Pluimgraaff - This  is the HMS Repulse from Trumpeter in 1:350 scale built by Jaap Pluimgraaff. Everything is hand painted apart from some experiments with air spray bottles from Tamiya on the main mast. Portholes, bridge windows and spotting top windows are made with crystal clear. March 31, 2011 USS Arizona BB-39, Revell Original Box Scale Kit, Built by Andrew Desautels - This is the old Revell USS Arizona with Gold Medal Models brass detail, a few bits from the Tom's Modelworks set, and a ton of scratch-building, including the Kingfishers and the 5" AA guns on the boat deck. Andrew Desautels is normally an aircraft builder, but this is his first serious attempt at a ship. Added to the Battleship Gallery.

March 29, 2011 Gremyashchiy, Soviet Project 7 Destroyer 1936, Combrig 1:350 Scale - Project 7 was the first new destroyer design of the Soviet Union . Called the Gnevnyi Class in the west, this design was completely modern and large and provided the back bone of the Soviet destroyer force in World War Two, suffering high losses in the Baltic and Black Seas . Combrig/Box 261 had provided their first 1:350 scale kit of a World War Two subject with their Northern Fleet Project 7 Gremyashchiy. The kit can be built full hull or waterline and contains not only finely detailed and crisp resin part but a huge relief–etched brass fret. Bravo Combrig! Added to the Destroyer Reviews Section.

March 23, 2011 USS Whidbey Island LSD-41, Ships & Co. 1:700 Scale, Built by Maurizio Chiaro - Here is a new kit from Ships & Co., the USS Whidbey Island LSD-41 in 1:700 scale. Maurizio Chiaro received it from the owners to express my opinion and for assembly. The box comes with a new image with a color that is close to blue, with the brand new label that  incorporates the Ships & Co. logo attached to the Model Victoria logo. March 18, 2011 HMS Trafalagar, Battle Class Destroyer, H-P Models, Built by John Rodriguez Asti - The model is an H-P Models  1/700 scale HMS Trafalgar. In the past year John Rodriguez Asti bought a H-P Models HMS St. James kit from Pacific Front Hobbies  and  he decided to complete it as the HMS Trafalgar. January 30, 2011 USCGC Firebush WLB-393, Coast Guard Buoy Tender, Scratch-Built in 1:48 Scale by Robert Rodriguez - This build  by Robert Rodriguez is a fully scratch-built 1/48 scale model of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Firebush  (WLB-393). The Firebush was a 180 foot ocean going buoy tender commissioned in July of 1944 and decommissioned in 2003 . Added to the Auxiliary Gallery.

January 27, 2011 RSS Sea Scorpion, Missile Patrol Boat Singapore Navy, Scratch-Built in 1:350 Scale by Zenden Ng - Zenden Ng served onboard RSS Sea Scorpion for nearly 4 years out of his short 6 year career in the Republic of Singapore Navy . It left a huge affection and impression on him. Zenden wanted to own it but unfortunately, there is no available kit of this model. January 21, 2011 CSS Teaser, Armed Tug Boat, Flagship Models 1:192 Scale, Built by Rusty White - Here is Rusty White's build of his Flagship Models kit of the 1/192 scale CSS Teaser.  Rusty needed a built up version for the box art as well as a mounting for the upcoming Civil War Reconnaissance Balloon kit which will be released soon. January 19, 2011 USS Vermont, Niko Model 1:700 Scale, Four Kings - Group Build - Niko of Poland released a cage mast version of the Connecticut class US Navy Predreadnoughts in late 2008, as the USS Vermont.   A number of modelers who expressed an interest in building this wonderful kit of at best a little known ship of the pre dreadnought era got together over the internet and decided to do a group build of her. Bob Cicconi, Neal Clarke, Bruno Gire, and Bruce Kapito each ordered the kit from our various retailers and set a start date for commencing their builds. Added to the Battleship Gallery.

January 11, 2011 Wilhelm Bauer, Type XXI U-Boat, Built by Chuck Bauer - Chuck Bauer built the Revell 1:144 scale model of Wihelm Bauer, which he built out of the box. This sub was a ‘test bed” for him, as it represents his first use of an airbrush. On the main hull he tried artist’s oils for weathering. Added to the Submarine Gallery.
