The USS Thomas (DE 102) sank a U-boat by ramming it aft of the conning tower. Phil Kirchmeier built the USS Thomas for an 85 year old ex crewman with vivid memories of the U-boat sinking. Phil converted the Iron Shipwright 1/350 scale Buckley class destroyer escort to the Cannon class USS Thomas. He then painted it in a Measure 32/3D scheme amd mounted it resting on drydock "blocks" atop a maple base. He enjoyed building this escort so much that he is now at work on a U-boat ramming diorama using the Revell USS Buckley to depict the USS Thomas. |
