On June 7, 1942 at 0659, after three days of vigorous battle against Japanese
aircraft and submarines, the USS Yorktown
(CV-5) slid under the sea, as the USS Hughes
(DD-410) stood as guard of honor.
I've recreated this moment using the GHQ 1/2400 Sims
Class destroyer and Yorktown Class USS
Enterprise CV-6, as a 1/2400 CV-5 is not offered. The water
surrounding the Yorktown is blackened
by oil and lines from the flight deck can be seen on the port side of the
carrier. Crewmen used these lines to lower themselves into the water as the
badly listing carrier was ordered to be abandoned.
